Happy Tail ~ Maverick "Mav"

Mav is doing great! We head to the cabin almost every weekend – and from the second we open the door of the car, he’s already in the lake taking a swim, and of course that means that we have to spend the first hour throwing the ball in the water for him before we can unpack. There are other dogs at the cabin and the best part is that when dogs bark at him, he looks at them and walks away, it doesn’t even faze him. People say he’s so well trained and very well mannered. When people first meet him, they think he’s going to jump all over them and when he doesn’t they are so surprised at his behavior. People compliment us on Mav all of the time – but we owe the credit to you!

He and Samoa are doing well together and act like brother sister. Last week when we got home from work, we discovered that the sliding pantry door was “mysteriously” open and the box of doggy treats was “broken into” – we have no clue who would have done such a thing – so we told Mav he needs to be a better guard dog, so it doesn’t happen again :) …..he smiled and agreed.

He loves when we leave for work because that means that he gets the big comfy couch to himself all day…we know this because I went home on my lunch break one day and I found him stretched out on the couch with his teddy bear and his ball by his side.

He has been nothing but loveable and playful and enjoys getting a lot of attention. He’s a perfect addition and fits right in – we couldn’t ask for a better dog!

Tell everyone Maverick says ‘Hi’ and misses you all – but admits that his new home is a perfect fit for him.

Happy Tail ~ Morgan "Moose"

Morgan or “Moose” as we now call him, is loving life in Denver! He and his new brother Kodie are best buddies and love to play and wrestle all day long. When he isn’t playing, he likes taking naps under the kitchen table or trying to eat anything and everything in sight. He loves all food and treats and he eats his breakfast and dinner almost faster than we can set it down. He gets so excited when it is time to eat that he hops on his back legs like a kangaroo until we put his bowl down, it is hilarious! He can “sit” with no problem but he is still learning “lay down” “stay” and “shake”. He loves to go outside but we live on the 5th floor of our building so we don’t have a yard for him yet. Lucky for us, Moose loves our balcony and would stay out there all day if we let him. We are moving in August and it will be a lot easier for him to go out to play and go potty once we get our new place.

Moose loves running down the hall with his brother to help us take out the trash or get on the elevator to go outside. Once we get outside, he loves going for walks, however, he would rather visit with all the other dogs and people walking by than do his puppy business. He is doing good with potty training and uses his puppy pads a couple times a day still. He still has little accidents here and there but he continues to get better each week.

He sleeps through the night with no problem on his pillow bed next to our bed. At least he starts on his bed, before morning he always find his way onto our bed and cuddles in with us. He does well in his crate when we are gone. He didn’t like that idea at first but he has done great the last 2 weeks or so. A few treats helped him realize that his crate was not such a bad place to be.

Moose has fit in perfectly here and we are so happy we were able to adopt him! Thanks again to everyone that helped us with the adoption and also those who helped get him to Omaha and eventually Denver.

Happy Tail ~ Wrigley

That boy, Wrigley, was herding a friend's two dogs a couple of days ago and it truly was funny. He is the king of his castle. His girl dog buddy comes over every day. She is an 11 month old 110 pound puppy and gives him a run for his money. Being a Catahoula, he chews. Anything with a strap is his favorite (purses, bras, shoelaces), but I can sew. He is usually pretty good about just ripping up his toys, but there are days when straps need to be "lawnmowered".

I asked God for a ball dog and a car dog. He is both. He would chase a ball for hours, if I let him and goes with me whenever I am not working. I can never thank you enough for keeping him until he found me.

I don't have kids and since my husband died a couple of years ago and I put my 17 year old setter down last May, I was starting to feel withdrawn from life...no more!

Hello Donna & friends at People For Pets!

This is Heather & Kristian Andersen. We adopted Sam (Sammi) the 2 year old great dane in June. We absolutely love her. She fits in our family so well & seems like she has always been a part of our lives. She is growing so fast. We had her in the vet last month and she weighed 95 lbs. As you know, she weighed 73 when we got her in June. She loves to run, lay on the couch and be lazy & is a great protector of our 2 year old son & two daughters. Sammi & Devin are the best of friends. She lets him lay on her, mess in her mouth and play with her ears. Many dogs would not stand for this.

She also loves to lay in the sun, go for car rides & prance around the neighborhood when we go for walks. Many people stop us on the street just to see her. In fact, we had a garage sale 3 weeks in a row. Sammi did not want to be in the house, she wanted to be out amongst the people stopping by. We were afraid that maybe people would be afraid of her but soon found out that they all loved her and had no problem with her being out there with them. Actually, they spent more time petting her than looking at the stuff we had. We joked & said that we should start charging people. She has made friends with 2 mini Doxies. She just gets along great with everyone.

We would like to thank you all for allowing us to have Sammi in our lives. She filled the hole we had in our hearts from recently putting our great dane to sleep after a long, hard spinal condition. We hope to maybe bring Sammi out sometime to see you all.

We adopted Harley (she was Sadie) from you in March 2008. She has been competing in agility for a while now and we had to share her most recent agility trial weekend with you. She ran 10 events in LaCrosse, WI last weekend and took first place in 9 of them. Attached is a pic of her with her ribbons – she doesn’t look too excited because she was exhausted when this picture was taken J But it was a good tired and we’re so proud of her. Thanks for helping us find this great addition to our family!!

In the background you see her BFF, Taffy, who was lurking because she knows that when Harley is that tired, she makes an excellent pillow. Shortly after this was taken, the two of them were snoozing on the floor together, totally conked out.

Hello Donna and Shelter Friends,

I have enclosed some photos of myself looking regal outside. I am really enjoying the warm weather and my 5 acre Invisible Fence. I think this summer when its warm I will play outside all day with the German Shorthairs and Ginger the Lab. Even today all I want to do is go outside and put my nose in the air and sniff the wind and imagine hunting all day in the grass for things that smell good to hounds - which as you know is about anything.

Mom and Dad continue to be difficult to train. They complain about me marking in the house, covering the walls with black fur, peeing in bed, throwing plates on the floor, eating the couch, jumping in the refridgerator, eating all their food off the counters, etc... They threaten to banish me to the garage. But I continue to work with them. I mean really who has ever heard of such a ridiculous rule as not standing on the kitchen table - hello what's it there for after all? I try to tell them all of this is ok and part of being a hound. They also continue to torture me with something called a Furminator (I suspect this means evil-fur-puller in Latin), claw trimmers, shampoo and ear cleaner on a regular basis. When they approach with these instruments of death I howl and bay and scream like I'm dying. But once again they are a little slow to pick up on this, I must continue with their training.

You will note in the pictures I have marked my territory (in more ways than one) with a Plott Hound sticker on my new SUV or the dog hauler as Mom calls it. I am still talking them into the "We love our Plott Hound" welcome sign for the house. Mom was going to take me shopping at the doggie boutique but apparently something about my behavior and peeing on everything in sight prohibited that last weekend - blah, blah, blah. They say perhaps if I'm good in a few weeks we'll go, something about not wanting to have to buy everything in the store if it has hound pee on it. Personally I think this would enhance the items' values, but as I've said Mom and Dad are a little slow at catching onto these ideas.

Well, toodles for now - must go lay in my bed in front of the corn stove before pondering my plan for destroying the house tonight.

Bubbles Surgery Update!

Bubbles had her eye surgery on January 3, 2011 in Omaha and everything went very well. :)

She has two rechecks in the future. She is recovering at Maxine's house and loving the attention. She has to wear a cone and that is causing a bit of a problem. :( Since she likes to cover herself with her blanket by biting the corner of it, she has trouble grabbing her blanket. Maxine has to help her get comfortable. I do believe that Bubbles will live happily ever after at Maxine's.

Thank you all that contributed to her surgery expense! The fundraising is still open to help with the cost so anyone willing to donate please mail or drop it off at our building or use the Paypal link on our website!

Bubbles is grateful to have her sight back! <3

Rescued Ice Dog Available for Adoption!

Some of you may remember the story in the link below about two dogs that were stranded on a slab of ice located on the Little Sioux River northwest of Spencer.

The owners claimed them both but the German Shepherd mix was recently surrendered to us. She just wouldn't stay in her outdoor kennel even though it is a six-foot fence. She climbed it when they were not around and able to watch her so she would run off. I guess she didn't want to be in a kennel.

Now that the beautiful Gretchen is with us she has been spayed. Spaying her from the beginning could have saved the owners some time and heartache since spaying lessens the chances of a dog running off when in heat.

So... who would like to adopt this girl? She’s great with kids, doesn’t mind cats and is good with all sizes of dogs. She even likes our Jack Russell, Harvey! So spread the word about the dog that made headlines in the Sioux City Journal and the St. Louis Today paper out of MO and find her a home filled with love and warmth!

Funny, Yet No Joke!

During these cold winter months many people use space heater to keep their rooms toasty warm. As a common sense rule you keep your children away from the heater and shouldn’t leave them unsupervised in the room where your heater is located. But you don’t hear too much about keeping your pets away from them.

The general guidelines and safety rules for these space heaters tell you to keep your children and pets away. I always thought that if my pet was that close to one and it was to hot they would move away from it. Children of course could very quickly reach out and touch it and burn themselves if the heater is to hot. I wonder it my pets are not cautious enough and would just run into it with their nose and get burned?

As most cat owners know, their cats love to be warm. At least mine do. Having them lay next to the heater has never been a problem in the past so why would I worry about them now. Well I’m going to tell you a little story about something that happened at my house just last night. Something I didn’t think would ever happen and to be honest never crossed my mind.

First I’ll tell you about my cat, Marshi Mellow. She is a white cat with a little dark coloring on the top of her head. She is the one cat that will lounge by the heater until her little pink skinned ears turn red. If the heater isn’t to warm she will lay on it and take little naps. She will wrap herself in a blanket and sometimes find herself almost being sat on just to be warm and cozy.

Marshi jumped up to where the food is in the kitchen to eat a little bit. My husband was there and noticed something was on her. A brown streak on her back, he then noticed one on her side. My first thought? Poop! Being the good mommy I am I sniffed the streaks, yeah they smelled. We both still assumed poop. But how in the world did she get poop on her back and side? Hmm

My hubby grabbed a small towel and dampened it to wipe the mysterious brown stuff off of her. As he rubbed and rubbed and rubbed, nothing was happening. It wasn’t coming off at all! So I decided I should just give her a bath. With a towel beside me on the kitchen counter and the cat shampoo on the other side I prepared the water to a nice warm temperature. Did you know that cats HATE to get a bath? Hehe

As I get her wet and pour the shampoo on her she of course is not impressed and meows this poor meow as if I am torturing her. The poor baby! Marshi is all lathered up and I notice that the brown streaks are not coming off yet again. What could this be that is stuck on my Marshi Mellow? Hmm

One of my older daughters comes out from her room and asked us what we were doing to Marshi. I explained the whole ordeal and this is what my smarty-pants daughter says to me. “She probably laid to close to the heater in my room and burned her hair.” Well DUH!! Why didn't we think of that? I rinsed Marshi off and sniffed her brown streaks again. Sure enough that is what she smelled like. Burnt hair!!

So now my hubby says that we have a Toasted Marshi Mellow! Cute right? Well it was at the moment. But it occurred to me that she could have done more that singe her hair. Could she have started on fire? That could have been a serious issue. The space heater is located in my children’s room and next to both of their beds! Not only that I’m pretty sure she would have ran out of that room and into the main living area. Causing much more damage than singed hair and possibly harming my family. The heater has been turned down and my children will have to use more blankets if they are cold.

Yeah, this story his humorous and it will be a story that we will tell repeatedly and laugh about. But it is also a matter that needs to be taken seriously and be shared for other reason besides a good laugh.

Please check your space heaters temperature setting and keep all of your loved ones safe and sound during these cold winter months! Share this story with others so that they will know that sometimes the unthinkable can happen!

Holiday Open House Wrap-Up

We wanted to say a huge Thank You to everyone who attended our Holiday Open House. Thanks also to all the wonderful volunteers who were on hand to give tours and provided the refreshments. It was a huge success!! We had over 100 people pass through our newly spruced up building. It was wonderful to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, attend a book-signing and enjoy some holiday treats. It was so great to see people inquiring about adopting our animals and how to volunteer with People for Pets. There was one harmful side effect of the event, however. Some of our canine friends seem to have snuck some of the goodies while the humans weren't looking so there were some up-set tummies around the kennel this morning! Thanks Again!

What a Saturday!

Today was a very P4P eventful day.

First thing I did was attended the Merry Holiday Open House. I bought a book; My Name is Ed or Betty, by Susan Kellen from Milford, IA. She donated 15% of what I paid to us and I now have a signed book! She was a very nice lady and I will hopefully someday get a chance to talk to her some more.

Wait, I will get that chance, Monday December 6^th! She will also be attending the Grand Meander in Spencer, IA where we will have 2 dogs sitting in the window of Medlar Studio (10 W 4^th St). Her book will also be available for a meet and greet with a percentage being donated to People For Pets! What a wonderful thing for her to do! Thanks Susan!

Moving right along…

Our photographer for the, Your Pet & Santa fundraiser, and I took a drive to The Christmas Tree Farm to check out the barn we will be having the pictures taken in. All I can say is that it will be fabulous as I have never seen a ‘rustic’ look when it comes to pictures with Santa. A little rearranging and set up of the equipment, it will be ready for some unique pictures with your pet and Santa!

After our visit at the tree farm I came home and started baking. Have I told you I hate to bake? But it’s all good. I found the easiest treats I could find to make for dogs and cats! I think they will be a huge hit because my furry family was begging for more after they graciously volunteered to be taste testers! J The candy cane shape didn’t work out the best for these particular treats but that’s fine by me…it was a fun lesson learned. Let me share the recipes with you.

Pumpkin Carob Drop Dog Treats

One 15 Oz Mashed pure pumpkin - not spiced!!!

3/4 cup of cream of wheat (or rice cereal)

1/2 cup of powdered milk

Unsweetened carob chips

Preheat oven to 300 F.

Mix all ingredients together. Using an inexpensive pastry bag, make 1-1/2 inch swirls or rosettes onto a lightly greased cookie sheet. In the center of each swirl drop a carob chip. Bake at 300 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Treats come out soft and slightly chewy!

I didn’t go buy any carob and I’ve read that if you make a lot you should freeze them because they will get moldy. I attempted to make them in the shape of a candy cane! J Little rosettes are much better looking and easier to accomplish. My dogs absolutely LOVED these and found the pumpkin to be an interesting change in taste compared to their other treats. Who knows if they will want to go back!

Holiday Cheese Ball Cat Treats

2 tablespoons of margarine

1/2 cup grated cheddar or cheddar jack cheese

1 egg white from a large egg

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1 teaspoon of fresh chopped catnip or 1/2 teaspoon of dried catnip

Combine the first three ingredients until well blended. In a separate bowl, combine flour and catnip. Add the flour mixture slowly to the first three ingredients, mixing until a soft dough ball is formed. Separate into 1/2-inch pieces and roll by hand into small balls. Place the balls on an ungreased cookie sheet, and bake at 300 degrees for approximately 25 minutes. Yield: Approximately 12 balls. Cool completely before serving.

To me these are a little to bready for my cats but they did try to eat them. I’m thinking it was the catnip! lol The size of them might have also been a factor in my cats decision to only lick them and not eat them. My dogs on the other hand enjoyed taking their turn as taste testers for these little cheese balls.

We also received our yearly news letter today. Can’t wait to post it and share it will everyone. This year it was a real tear jerker to read. I’m so proud to be working with this group despite our differences. I love you ladies (and gentleman) for all you accomplished this year. So many wonderful and entertaining fundraisers! Give yourselves a pat on the back and remember, if it wasn’t for you these animals wouldn’t have anyone! <3

Finally, as I sit and type this up, my mind is filled with many things to say but I’m not sure how to get them out. So I guess I’ll just save those for another day!

6-8pm @ The Christmas Tree Farm on Hwy 18 ~ Around 2 miles East of Dickens. Last place on the right (south) before County Hwy N14 (Terril blacktop).

$5 for the first printed picture and $3 each additional printed picture.

$5 for each digital pose to be e-mailed or burned to a CD so you can do whatever you would like to do with the picture.

Pictures can be taken with any pet. For an extra $2 donation add your two-legged family members.

Additional free will donations will be accepted to help with the cost of supplies.

Hot chocolate and hot apple cider will be served! Your pet will receive a homemade pumpkin flavored candy cane dog treat! Cats will also have a special treat!

Happy Tail: Cooper aka Scooby

Happy Tails: A heartwarming reminder that every volunteers dedication and hard work has a purpose! Thank You for this reminder Pappas family!

Just a note to let you know how Thankful we are that you saved Cooper. He is a wonderful dog. My husband commented that even if we had written all of the qualities we would want in a dog, Cooper is way beyond anything that we would have requested. He is loyal and loves people. He gets us moving every morning and every evening. He has a minimum of 2 walks per day! He runs like the wind and next summer we plan on teaching him to catch a frisbee. He is very affectionate and will spend as much time as he can right by our sides. He has gained about 2 to 3 pounds, food is not a priority for him. He responds to commands with treats, an inexpensive dog food does the trick for mini treats. A friend commented, (upon wondering), how could we receive another outstanding rescue dog as he is our third rescued dog. Our first dog was approximately 13 years old when she was found as a stray, and our second dog was 6 years old when we rescued him from South Dakota. We cherished each of them and miss them. I buried our last dog, Reggie, in my flower garden that I look at every time I leave the house or return to the house. He meant the world to us and would have enjoyed Cooper!

We could not be happier, Cooper has added so much to our family.

Cy - He's Thankful For Compassion

Cy is a handsome 2 year old neutered male Bichon. He has a very sad story to tell...... He was dropped off at the shelter on a Saturday just before Thanksgiving. But unfortunately Cy did not have very much to be thankful for. After a divorce he had been chained outside for months with no care, discarded like a piece of used furniture on the curb. By the time he came to rescue he was matted over every inch of his body. His feet were encased in wet, rotting mats of dirt, urine and feces. He had open bloody sores on his neck and shoulders, likely from the rubbing of a chain that tied him out. He also showed the scar of an eye injury that had receive no treatment. Despite all this and the pain and discomfort he must have been in, he wagged his little tail and kissed and kissed the rescue volunteers at the shelter.

Cy was in such terrible shape that the shelter volunteer had tears in her eyes as she checked him into the shelter. She knew she couldn't leave him for even the rest of the weekend in the condition he was in, he had suffered enough. So an emergency call went out to a volunteer groomer and soon, on that cold November Saturday night, he was being driven to another volunteer's house so he could get the emergency grooming and care he needed.

By Sunday morning Cy was having a full body shave down, his wounds cleaned and a medicated bath and soak to calm his inflamed skin and open sores. A massive pile of filthy, dirty, matted fur came off of him - much of it in one large sheet all matted together. From under all the fur and dirt emerged a happy and beautiful little Bichon boy - so happy to be free of the filth and pain he'd endured for months on end.

After being freed from his mats and given several baths - Cy was so delighted he rolled and rolled in pillows - feeling the soft warmness against his skin for the first time in many, many months.

We never want Cy to again know the cruelty and neglect of careless humans. Can you show him that from now on humans will be his source of care, nurturing and love? He is a very, very sweet and outgoing boy. He loves to play with other dogs and follow his person everywhere. He gives big wet puppy kisses with his soft tongue. Cy is hoping so much that his stay in the shelter will be short and he can again soon be someone's beloved pet. He dressed up in his Christmas clothes for his pictures, just so you can see that he'd make the perfect little elf to brighten your home this Christmas season. Let's make a Christmas miracle come true for Cy this holiday season and give him a happy ending to his story.

People For Pets is very excited to have a published and recognized author, Susan Kellen from Milford IA, visiting us during our open house December 4^th. Her book will be available for purchase and she has graciously offered to donate a percentage of the sales to us.

This book was featured in the August 2010 issue of Cat Fancy, in the 'Books for Cat Lover's’ column. An ad placed in a local shopper was featured on Jay Leno's Headlines because it mentioned her cats name, which is the book name.

I finally accepted Nikki's invitation to blog. Another new experience for me! Nikki (the computer website wizard) has been TRYING to teach me to work on the PFP website. Thank goodness she is patient!:)
Today was my chore day at the shelter. One of the kittens, Bess, (who is adorable...black and white with very unique markings) seems to think she needs to be wrapped around the back of my neck as I am in her cage doing chores. She purrs as loud as can be, "talks" like she is in charge of the whole place, and she has the ear nibble down too! Then there is Sammy.....snow white, soft, and snazzy. I believe he weighs in at 20 pounds! That big cat amazes me at how gracefully he jumps onto the office desk. He can't get enough under-the-chin-scratchin'.
And I have to mention our two fierce dog-wanna-be's at the shelter.....Haley and Teki. What a pair!! Check out these two tiny warriors on our website. Time to go. Talk to you soon!!

Help Bubble's Quest for Corrective Eye Surgery

We are still looking for donations for the surgery on BOTH of her eyes! Please donate in some way, even a $5 contributions is something. Basically you'll miss out on one fast food meal, one pack of smokes, a drink or two at your local bar, a couple bottles of pop or a few trips to the vending machine. Bubble's quality of live is in need of your kind hearts. Since she is fairly young this surgery will greatly enhance her quality of life by increasing her change of being adopted. What could be more satisfying that knowing you had some part in that?

Meet Bubbles, a very loving and playful girl that is a late sleeper. Usually the last dog at the shelter to wake up in the morning. She burrows under her covers and disappears when she is in her kennel taking a nap. Bubbles has cataracts in both of her eyes and is scheduled for corrective surgery. The cost for this is around $2600 for one eye or $3600 for both eyes, if done at the same time. As of now, we are only able to have one eye corrected. Anyone who would like to donate to Bubble's surgery please drop it off at the shelter, or mail it to us:

A Pet's Ten Commandments

This has been around for awhile now but I feel that it needs to be spread around even more and be shared with everyone. Even if you have read this before please take the time to reflect on what this is saying about our furry family members!

My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
Give me time to understand what you want of me.
Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.
